Society for Poole February Newsletter 2018

Chairman’s Note

We are now way into 2018, gosh doesn’t time fly by! Talking of which I hope to see as many people as possible at our AGM in May as there are many things to report and to discuss. Top of the pile is the potential to make The Society for Poole a “Charitable Incorporated Organisation” (CIO) Fundamentally this will ensure that we are properly structured for the future and embrace a set up with Trustees and a formal constitution, the details of which are available to all.

Meanwhile we have had a fantastic couple of social events with the largest gathering for our annual lunch at the Thistle for many years. We also welcomed Christmas with a free event at our new “home” of the British Legion Hall in North Road Parkstone. Approximately 100 people attended and were entertained by a young dance troupe and musicians. I trust that everyone who attended had a great time and many thanks to Gordon Brown for organizing it.

2018 will be an interesting time for the Society, we hope to create the CIO, as I have mentioned, we also are in the process of establishing the Parks and Green Space sub Committee which will be headed by Michael Collins, the Chairman of the Friends of Poole Park. It is hoped that other parks will join us in order to create a strong team to speak for Poole’s green spaces.

We also aim to place a Blue Plaque in Poole this year, refurbish some existing notices and position an information board in front of the old Powder House at Baiter. Heritage is important to all of us and so I hope that a leader of this aspect of our Society will come forward. Similarly the Planning & Built Environment team, lead by Gerald Rigler are keen for support and would more than welcome assistance from people interested in the strategic plans for Poole as well as commenting on local planning issues.

Participation in the Society is critical, we are only funded from our members and can only operate effectively with support from you. This can be contributing to the Executive, our committees, providing ideas and initiatives or assisting at events.

We have a lot to look forward to in 2018 and I hope to see you along the way.

Mike Pearce Chairman, January 2018
