Beating the Sea Bounds of Poole - 07/07/2024
Some 7000-10,000 people attended this event on Poole Quay, which had not been seen for many years. It has its origins in the Winchelsea Certificate of 1364, a critical part of Poole's history, when the Mayor of Poole was given the title of Admiral of the Port and jurisdiction over the land and sea of Poole and its harbour. The Charter is the foundation of Poole as a port and recognised its growing importance. The ceremony centres on inspecting the boundary around the harbour. the Mayor of Wareham and the Jurat of Winchelsea attended - the first time anyone can recall a representative of Winchelsea joining the Mayor of Poole for the celebration. Alongside the traditional ceremony this was a day of pirates, sea shanties, stalls and funfair - a great day for everyone.
